What it is

JAMB combines four subjects into one examination. You’ll take English (which is compulsory) plus three other subjects related to your course of study. Each subject is worth 100 marks, giving you a total possible score of 400 marks.

The examination runs on computers, meaning you’ll be clicking answers on a screen, not writing on paper. You get 2 hours to complete all four subjects, so time management is crucial.

When it happens

The JAMB calendar starts with registration opening around December or January. This is when you’ll need to create your profile, choose your exam subjects, and select a center. The main examinations take place between March and May, with specific dates assigned to different centers.

Results are typically released within a month after your exam date. It’s important to note that registration doesn’t stay open indefinitely; there’s usually a two-month window to register, so don’t delay once it opens.

How it works

On your exam day, you’ll arrive at your chosen center with your examination slip and valid ID. After biometric verification, you’ll be assigned to a computer. The exam interface shows one question at a time, with options to mark questions for review or skip and return later.

You’re free to manage your two hours across all subjects as you prefer. There’s no fixed time per subject. The system automatically submits when your time expires, so watch the countdown clock carefully.

All questions are multiple-choice, and you can change your answers until you submit or time runs out.

Common Questions About JAMB

What is the highest JAMB score possible?

The highest score you can achieve in JAMB is 400. This comes from scoring 100 in each of the four subjects you’ll take during the examination. However, most universities consider scores above 200 as competitive for most courses.

How long is JAMB result valid?

JAMB results are valid for only one academic year. If you don’t gain admission within that year, you’ll need to retake the examination for the next admission cycle.

What are the requirements for JAMB registration?

To register for JAMB, you need your National Identification Number (NIN), O’Level results or awaiting results, a valid email address, and a functioning phone number. You must also be at least 16 years old at the time of registration.

How can I check my JAMB result?

You can check your JAMB result by visiting the JAMB portal (www.jamb.gov.ng), clicking on ‘Check UTME Results’, and entering your registration number or email address. Results are typically released within a month after the examination.

What happens if I fail JAMB?

There’s no official “pass” or “fail” in JAMB. However, if you score below your chosen institution’s cut-off mark, you can either apply to institutions with lower cut-off marks, wait to retake the exam the following year, or consider the JAMB Direct Entry option if you’re qualified.

Can I change my course after JAMB?

Yes, you can change both your course and institution choice after taking JAMB. This is done through the JAMB portal during the change of course/institution period, which usually opens after results are released.
